About Fickle Father

I’m Fickle Father, an LDS dad of six, a husband, and just some dude trying to navigate a complicated relationship with faith, family, and finding meaning.

For the longest time, I thought I was just, well… fickle. I’m the guy who pursues different interests right up until the moment I lose interest. Over the years, I’ve done a lot of the things people usually just talk about doing:

  • I graduated from college and law school.
  • I started a family with my awesome wife (we have six kids — three girls and three boys).
  • I actually wrote a book! On the Amazon best-sellers list it is currently ranked #1…million five hundred thousand and something in its specific sub-category.
  • I started a podcast that gained some notoriety in its day (it was called “Small Business Stories”).
  • I moved from the suburbs to a small farm.
  • I hung my own shingle as a lawyer.
  • I sold a business (my law practice).
  • I practiced public service law helping the poor.
  • I was nominated for an award by my peers (Yes, I’m an award-winning attorney).
  • I became the “cheesecake guy” around town.
  • I joined a fortune 500 company as an in-house attorney.
  • I bought a house on a lake.

Some of these things probably sound better, and perhaps more snooty, in a bullet point form than how they would look if you were to dig into the details (and I’m not embarrassed to share those details). But I’m proud of these accomplishments, even if the details aren’t as glamourous as they might sound.

For a long time, I was down on myself about not having that one hobby that I stick with my whole life. Or, I felt bad that I never really seemed to find my passion that would make it so “I never have to work a day in my life when I’m doing the thing I love.”

An Epiphany on Passion

Then I stumbled upon a Ted Talk on YouTube and discovered there is actually a word for this: Multipotentialite.

When I learned that this was a thing, it seemed to fit me pretty well. I’m not so sure I would call it a superpower as explained in the Ted Talk, but it is nice to know you’re not alone in experience life in this way.

At this point, I consider being a multipotentialite — or a fickle person — to be in a lot of ways like an artist. I want to create the things I feel I should create, and put them out into the ether. I want to explore ideas and things I want to explore just because I think they should be explored.

What is this Website?

This website is the home for all of that exploration. It’s a repository where I showcase the various projects I’ve worked on, dive into my rotating hobbies, and keep track of whatever currently has my attention.

A Featured Project: The Thinkering & Tinkering Podcast

Thinkering & Tinkering: An LDS Dad’s Search for Meaning is one of those creations. It is an autobiographical narrative memoir about my exploration of the intersections of life, family, and faith.

I’m not on social media because it always gets me a little depressed. So if you want to reach out to tell me what resonates, what I got wrong, or anything in between, the only way to do so is to leave a comment on Spotify or email me at hi@ficklefather.com.
